How It Works

What to expect — from the first call to real change at home.

Overview

Couples counseling can feel like a big step. Understanding what to expect from the process helps take some of the mystery out of it so you and your partner can arrive ready to engage.

The first conversation

It starts with a brief consultation, usually by phone or video. We’ll ask about what’s bringing you in, what you’ve tried, and what you’re hoping for. From there we’ll match you with a clinician whose training and style fit your needs and schedule an intake session for the two of you together.

Assessment and goal-setting

In the first few sessions your therapist will get to know both of you — your history, your strengths, the patterns that keep tripping you up. Often we meet individually with each partner once, then reconvene as a couple to name a shared roadmap: what you want more of, less of, and what “better” actually looks like in day-to-day life.

Ongoing work

Sessions are typically weekly or bi-weekly at first, then may space out as you gain traction. We use evidence-based frameworks (Gottman Method, EFT, IFS, and integrative relational approaches) to help you communicate more effectively, repair after rupture, deepen connection, and build the relationship you both want.
